So, you’ve made it. Congratulations! Even though there is still a good two months before the fall semester, as an incoming freshman, that first semester of your college journey is probably all you can think about right now (that’s all I did summer 2019 c:). For some, this is the first time you will be away from home for a long period of time, something that seems daunting. For others, this distance from home is something that you have been longing for. Whatever the case may be, it is important to create your own home while in college.
Taking the Metro: Best stops for the best sights
I’ve had an amazing time traveling around the city using the Metro, which is free for WashU students. I loved getting to see the city that way! Here are some of my favorite spots in St. Louis that fall right on the Metro line.
안녕하세요! Bonjour!
And Hello! Hopefully in seven years I can greet everybody in six more languages 🙂 My name is Leandra and I’m a first-year student whose goal is to become a polyglot. This is the part where you’re thinking, “What in the world…” Well, a polyglot is someone who is able to speak or use multiple […]
First snow of the season at WashU!
I am constantly reminded of how beautiful this campus is, and never is it more picturesque than after that first snowfall, when the old buildings stand atop a glistening white carpet.
Nice to Meet You!
It’s nice to meet you! My name is Allana Thompson. I am a current sophomore at Wash U pursuing Animation through a Studio Art/Communication Design major and a minor in Korean Language and Culture!
Showing Up: A Guide to WashU Audition Week
Unsurprisingly for many of us, WashU has a decent number of students on campus that were considered “Theater Kids” in high school; the awkward kids who belted out the Wicked soundtrack in their bedrooms or cried themselves to sleep listening the Hamilton circa 2017. These are the real nitty gritty salt of the Earth theater […]
Countless cover letters: Applying for summer internships
Yes, it is true that you will receive far more nos than yesses. I definitely did. But what people don’t tell you is that the most common response you will receive will be absolute silence. Even after follow up emails, the large majority of places I contacted never responded to me. For a while it felt like I was shouting into the void, and every day I lost a little bit of hope of ever getting that miraculous “yes.” And then I did.
Extra! Extra!: Writing for Student Life Newspaper
Our newspaper is called Student Life and has been printing since 1878, making it the oldest independent college newspaper west of the Mississippi River! I knew I wanted to get involved with Student Life when I got to campus in August, but I wasn’t sure to what extent. To my surprise, all I needed to do was add myself to the email list, which I did at Student Life’s booth at the Fall Activities Fair.
Fun Dorm Activities: Baking!
When I first visited WashU, my favorite thing about the 40 was, and continues to be, the community I’ve found there. There’s so much to do, whether it’s running to Bear’s Den to grab a meal and staying for hours talking with friends, buying candy at the student owned and run Bear-y Sweet Shop, or having a karaoke night with my floormates in the common room. This semester, one of my favorite features of residential life has been the kitchens in my dorm building.
My Scholarship Programs at WashU!
When I traveled to campus this time last year for Scholars Weekend, I thought that the merit scholarships I would be interviewed for were monetary awards and nothing else. However, as the weekend went by, I quickly realized that the program would be so much more than that. With Scholars Weekend fast approaching, here’s a look into my experience with my scholarships for those who might be about to arrive on campus as scholarship finalists!
Explore STL! Ways To Get Off Campus
With so much happening on campus, it can be hard to make time to step out of the WashU bubble. But it’s worth it. Whether you come from a big city or tiny, remote town, St. Louis has everything you could want. Here are some fun ways I’ve gotten off-campus this year.
