On Tuesday, the Muslim Students Association brought Ibtihaj Muhammed to speak in Graham Chapel. Muhammed was the first US athlete to compete in the Olympics while wearing a hijab, a traditional headscarf that many Muslim women wear. She spoke about how she started fencing because it allowed her to dress conservatively without sticking out from her teammates and about discrimination she has faced in the professional fencing world as a Black Muslim woman. She also spoke about having her very own Barbie doll going into production, which had only been announced by Mattel the day before! As a fellow female saber fencer, I was so inspired by her talk!
